"Fuck With Myself" is a song by Banks. It is the second track and lead single off her second major-label album, The Altar. The song premiered on July 12, 2016, on Zane Lowe’s World Record on Beats 1 Radio. The music video for the track was uploaded to on her Vevo Channel on August 16, 2016.

Background[]

On her track-by-track interview for Refinery29, Banks talked about how the song came to be: "This was the last song on the album that I wrote. I thought the album was done and I started freaking out about which song to put out first. So I went to the studio one day and started telling [my co-writer] Tim Anderson that I was really feeling the pressure and expectation of this business, especially over which song to put out first because I hadn't shared any new music in so long. When I stopped talking, finally, he was like, 'Do you want me to read you some of the things you said? You said, "I fuck with myself more than anybody else."' And I was like, that's exactly what I needed to hear and that's what I'm going to write about today."[1]

Theme[]

About the theme of the song, Banks stated on her track-by-track interview for Refinery29: "For me, this song is really about a journey of self-acceptance and of power and strength."[2]

On Genius, Banks talked more about the song in the "verified commentary" section. On the verse "Cause I fuck with myself more than anybody else" she said: "It has many meanings. I wrote it initially because I wanted to convey that I am my own best friend. That I believe in myself and that I don’t care what others think. It can also mean I mess with myself more than anybody else. We can be our own bullies and our own biggest champions."

About the bridge of the song, Banks said: "I have been hurt in the past by caring too much about other people’s opinions of me. It turns you into a piece of rubber bending in whatever direction people’s opinions push/pull you in. It’s a much yummier life loving yourself fully and unabashedly. It’s all love."[3]

On her interview for TIME, Banks also talked about why she chose the song to be the lead-single: "I decided this should come first because this album is my altar. It represents who I am. If you’re putting yourself out there that much, you can’t care what people think of you."[4]

Lyrics[]

I got two diamonds and a feather
Gimme three reasons why we ain’t together
I push my body through the floor like
Cause I fuck with myself more than anybody else

You’re on the corner waiting for my love
I put two walls behind you just to lean on
You’re gonna need em cuz I stood you up
Cause I fuck with myself more than anybody else

Cuz I fuck with myself more than anybody else
It's all love
I used to care what you think about me
It's all love
Cause my love so good
So I fuck with myself more than anybody else

I caught you fishing through the fodder
This whole relationship is under water
You’re facing ages in your third strike
Cause I fuck with myself more than anybody else

Cause I fuck with myself more than anybody else
It's all love
I used to care what you think about me
It's all love
Cause my love so good
So I fuck with myself more than anybody else

I used to have a nickel for what you say, baby
Your words would burn me in the third degree
Now baby look what it’s come to
Cause my love is the one
My love is the one

So I fuck with myself more than anybody else
It's all love
I used to care what you think about me
It's all love
Cause my love so good
So I fuck with myself more than anybody else
